If
you're a fan of mockumentaries like "This is
Spinal Tap" or "Man Bites Dog" or
"Best in Show" then you will enjoy "Lollilove."
It's a funny little film about a Los Angeles couple
- real life husband and wife Jenna Fischer of "The
Office" and James Gunn who directed
horror film "Slither" - who decide to start
a charity to help the homeless.
The
couple has differing ideas of why they want to start
a charity - Jenna wants to
meet famous people and James really kinda doesn't
care - and they choose to start a charity
called "Lollilove" to hand out bubble gum
filled, inspiring, lollipops to the homeless. It's
a
funny idea and the process of putting together the
charity, which makes up most of the film -
as Jenna and James try to find sponsors and such -
has some hilarious moments, but it's not a
consistently funny film, like a lot of mockumentaries.
"Lollilove"
has a pretty straightforward delivery, they stay on
subject and the plot is always
moving, but the film still seems kinda long. The film
is built all upon one idea, and while it's a
funny idea, it could have been an extended Saturday
Night Live skit.
There are some hilarious, and twisted, gems in this
film though - like when James talks about
how good things sometimes come from tragedies, like
Steven Spielberg winning an Academy
Award for "Schindler's List" because of
the Holocaust - and the deadpan comedy of
everyone involved is excellent. There are great guest
stars - including Lloyd Kaufman,
founder of Troma films - and "Lollilove"
is a good waste of time, but it's still kind of a
waste of time.
Written and directed by Jenna Fischer, "Lollilove"
appears to have been a fun, personal project
- it is fun and you can see the care and joy they
had in making this - but unless you can see
it for free, don't bother seeing it
