Tambourines and la-la-la choruses. Garage-rock and
psychedelia. A voice reminiscent of
a less turbulent Juliette Lewis. This is, in short,
Cherry Overdrive's debut album.
The band is made up of four ass-kicking girls from
Copenaghen, Denmark.
The record starts with the garage triad What It Takes,
Sheryl's Faith and Shake It Up!, brisk,
tight and entertaining songs. Then, the psychedelic
rock and roll of Reptiles, one of the best
songs on the album. Did You? is the unavoidable ballad
for broken hearts, with its
disconsolate wah wah guitar. Venture is a slow and
winding instrumental number that will catapult
you into the Californian desert, or a Tarantino movie.
I can clearly see Black Mamba getting ready
to kill someone while this song plays
watch
you! We go back to sixties rock with Hey Sugar,
while Don't Trash My Tale and Hit The Right Note are
faster and more energetic.
It's a shame the album ends with The Fall
after
11 lively songs that last an average of 3
minutes each, the weak final track, with its 10.23
endless minutes, sounds soporific rather
then epic. Full of r'n'r clichés, Clear Light!
is highly enjoyable, but hardly ground-breaking.
