No Use For A Name are punk rock veterans who
have stayed in the game with sugary
hooks, angry/smart/political lyrics and a relentless
work ethic. I crawled up into the tour bus
when they stopped at the House of Blues in Cleveland,
and they told me a bit about themselves,
their party habits, their opinion of the popular
punk bands and the best metal song of all time.
Hammer: So, you guys always ride in
the big bus?
NUFAN:
We have been for a little while. You can't
really do the Warped Tour without having a
bus.
And in Europe we always use a bus
. States,
I think this is the second time we actually
got on for
a States tour. It's just the best way to keep
sanity.
Hammer:
I see you guys got the laptop computers there,
and the internet access - go check
out www.brokendollz.com
so you know what you're doing an interview
for.
NUFAN:
This is for a porn site.
Hammer:
Yeah. That's good right?
NUFAN:
Totally cool. Are the girls here.
Hammer:
I don't think there are any here tonight,
no.
NUFAN:
They are but they're all black chicks for
you.
Hammer:
Woah, woah. What's up with that? No love
for the black girls?
NUFAN:
Are you kidding? HUGE fan.
Hammer:
Gotta like the ghetto booty, I'm saying. Junk
in the trunk, the black girls tend to bring
it,
and I like it.
NUFAN:
Hot is hot no matter where it comes from.
Hammer:
Very true. You guys will like the Broken Dollz.
NUFAN:
Unless they're sitting in a movie theater,
screaming so loud I can't understand what
anybody's
saying. 'Gimme that goddamn cell phone,' alright,
go ahead.
Hammer:
I hear ya. Bitchy people, bitchy girls not
cool. Too bitchy for their hotness?
NUFAN:
Yeah yeah, where they just kinda talk too
much.
Hammer:
Sometimes you're not hot enough to be bitchy.
If your super hot, maybe I overlook it - but
if
you're only semi-cute and bitchy, that's not
good.
NUFAN:
Yeah, Matt bitches a lot, and he's not hot,
so we don't listen.
Hammer:
Well, hot girls listen to music. And I got
your new album - 'Keep Them Confused"
- and that's
your 8th or 9th right?
NUFAN:
Yeah, pretty much. I think the 8th.
Hammer:
Countin the "Live in the Dive" one?
NUFAN:
I think so.
Hammer:
Have you guys always been on Fat Wreck Chords?
NUFAN:
In the early days we were on
um
..
New Red Archives, then Mike - Fat Mike of
Fat Wreck
Chords and NOFX - bought the old records off
that
. Starting around Daily Grind
I think.
Hammer:
I think the first one I had was "Leche
con Carne."
NUFAN:
Yeah, that happens a lot.
Hammer:
Is there one album that people usually harken
back to?
NUFAN:
There's that one - "Leche.." and
they also like "More Betterness"
a lot.
Hammer:
I like that one too. I guess I'm like everybody
else.
NUFAN:
Yeah, which is funny, I like "Leche
"
a lot. But I also like "Hard Rock Bottom"
and I really like
this last one. I think we've gotten a little
more diverse with the songs.
Hammer:
Well. Now that you mention it. You're kinda
getting old for a punk rock band. With the
8th,
or 9th, album, how do you keep it new and
keep writing songs.
NUFAN:
I can not explain it. For some reason it just
hasn't gotten boring yet. There's a million
other
career choices to have. But none of them have
sounded as appealing as this. So we're always
trying
to stay fresh, and do new little things. I
mean
. There's definitely night when
I don't dig it, but
.
Hammer:
You like the touring?
NUFAN:
Yeah, but for every upside there's a downside.
You spend so much time away from home it's
really hard, but, um, you can't wait to play,
so
. And you get to meet cool people.
Hammer:
Alright. You have been on the road a lot.
And you've been around a lot of years. I mean.
There are certainly older bands, but there
are a lot of younger ones. Should there be
an age limit
on punk rock?
NUFAN:
You know, I think
.. How old is Iggy
Pop now? Iggy Pop is 78 years old now, so
Hammer:
Are there over the hill punk bands that shouldn't
be touring anymore?
NUFAN:
Iggy Pop. No. If people still come to your
shows and they're still diggin it, then, whatever.
I mean, how old is Charlie from UK Subs? That
guys probably 60. I guess, people like that
should
probably stop.
Hammer:
Well, you do have the old blues guys who play
until they die, is that different?
NUFAN:
The older those guys are the better though.
That stuff gets better with age.
Hammer:
Punk rock doesn't get better with age?
NUFAN:
Well. I don't,,, no. I don't think so at all.
It stays just as fun to do, but, face it,
the fans want
young and exciting people. That's the way
the world works. It doesn't mean that you're
any less good
at what you do or enjoy it less, but the reality
is the opportunities thin out the older you
get.
Hammer:
Are you not as pissed off when you're
older?
NUFAN:
I'm more pissed off, I'm twice as pissed off
but I'm also twice as mellow. Go figure that
out.
It's called eccentric.
Hammer:
So you're balancing the stuff nowadays. You've
been on tour 3 weeks now, this time, do you
notice all younger kids, or are there some
older fans, that still stuck around?
NUFAN:
Oh yeah. There are always older fans. But
now they bring their younger brothers and
sisters
now, or sometimes their kids, which is odd.
We definitely still have a lot of the old
fan base around,
and some areas more than others, which is
always cool.
Hammer:
Ok, well I'm with a Web site, and you guys
are on the Web doing the Myspace thing right?
NUFAN:
Yeah
Hammer:
You guys embrace the technology?
NUFAN:
You have to. There's no other way to keep
up with it. I love it though. I think it's
cool. I'll
never have my own myspace account, I don't
back it, I think it's a sketchy thing, but
for bands
.. it works.
Hammer:
What? How could myspace be sketchy? You guys
check it out, do you check out the other
sites, sites like Broken Dollz?
NUFAN:
We will now.
Hammer:
You into that young, cute, girls getting naked
thing?
NUFAN:
Actually, that kinda sucks.
Hammer:
Really, so you deny that at the show. 'Please
baby, put your top back on.'
NUFAN:
Oh hell no. That shit never gets old. I'm
a big fan of girls with tattoos.
Hammer:
Excellent. Broken Dollz has some of them.
What else are you a fan of?
NUFAN:
Video games.
Hammer:
Which games. Is that a big pastime on the
bus.
NUFAN:
Oh yeah.
Hammer:
What are the big video games on the NUFAN
bus?
NUFAN:
Right now, it's Madden '06 and Halo 2. We
had Tiger Woods golf, but actually, all the
games
got taken away. It was the bus drivers system
and during a party something got spilled on
it and he
freaked out and it got taken away.
Hammer:
What's that? Punk rockers always spilling
stuff? Can't follow the rules?
NUFAN:
Actually we had a raging party in here the
other week.
Hammer:
Is there a specific 'no party zone' now cause
of the video game?
NUFAN:
No, there is a 'no smoking' rule. Definitely
no smoking on the bus.
Hammer:
Yes. Smoking kills, but partying is good.
NUFAN:
This party the other week. You could definitely
pee on the floor zone.
Hammer:
Urination on the bus floor is encouraged?
NUFAN:
Not encouraged, but almost always unstoppable.
Other bands come on the bus and they're
like 'Oh, it's not my bus' so they just piss
on the floor.
Hammer:
Do you do that in revenge?
NUFAN:
No.
Hammer:
Is peeing on the bus floor the sign of a good
party?
NUFAN:
No. Tattooed naked chicks are the sign of
a good party.
Hammer:
What's the sign of a good show?
NUFAN:
Tattooed naked chicks. Wailing leads, when
kids are stoked. When they're stoked then
we are, or even if they aren't so into it,
but we sound really good, then hooray for
us.
Hammer:
Do you guys play mostly new stuff at shows
nowadays?
NUFAN:
No. We break it up.
Hammer:
Is there more enthusiasm for the old stuff
or new stuff?
NUFAN:
Again, it depends on the area. On the east
coast it seems the newer albums are doing
better,
and the old stuff is doing better on the west.
Hammer:
Where are the best towns to play? For NUFAN?
NUFAN:
This tour Tallahassee was amazing.
Hammer:
Who were you with?
NUFAN:
We played with Suicide Machines, Versus the
World and I am the Avalanche. Montreal and
Toronto are always great, Winnepeg is always
good for us too - Canada is always pretty
crazy.
Hammer:
Is it PC to like Canada?
NUFAN:
I like Canada for the most part, for the most
part. Canada, in general, Canadians are cool
- but the border crossing. I've been all over
the world and never had it as rugged as going
into Canada.
Dude, we went into Russia and it was easier,
to going into Canada.
Hammer:
So it's easier to smuggle things in Europe?
NUFAN:
We don't smuggle things, it's not worth it.
The biggest drug that goes on in this bus
is pot.
Hammer:
The tour has been good though?
NUFAN:
It's been hit or miss. We're definitely seeing
a fluctuation of the scene, if you will, it's
always
been a rollercoaster - sometimes it's an amazing
tour, sometimes it's rough - but we're seeing
a definite
down cycle right now. But we've been through
it so many times. This new scene
. This
whole
Fall Out Boy bullshit scene is
.
Hammer:
You're not into that?
NUFAN:
No, not at all.
Hammer:
You don't think it'll stick around longer
than the whole Sum 41 scene or whatever
.
NUFAN:
No. It think it all kinda started with Blink
182, they did good for a while, then dropped
off and
somebody else came around.
Hammer:
Blink was around longer than a lot though.
NUFAN:
Yeah, but it's getting shorter and shorter
though. Like, My Chemical Romance was the
biggest
band in the world for about
.. 2 months.
Then all the side Fall Out Boy came out, and
they don't even
have a gimmick. They're just 4 guys that look
funny.
Hammer:
Do you need a gimmick. Does NUFAN have a gimmick.
NUFAN:
We don't have a gimmick. No, not at all. I
think a lot of bands today you need something
like
that though. Something extra special to make
you like the band
Our gimmick is great
looking guys
playing great rock and roll.
Hammer:
Are you guys listening to the new 'scene'
on the bus? What is the playlist for the NUFAN:
bus?
NUFAN:
Everybody has an I-pod, so it's their own
thing. We pretty much only listen to metal
around
here. That's pretty much all you need. Really.
Just tell me what answer I need to give you
that'll make
some of those girls from that Web site dig
me?
Hammer:
We do have some metal chicks, so that's a
good answer. What's the best metal song of
all time though.
NUFAN:
Best metal song
that's tough. I'm gonna
go with Hallowed Be Thy Name by Iron Maiden.
Hammer:
Any Iron Maiden riffs on the new album?
NUFAN:
No. We like the album. People kinda trip on
it cause there's a lot of slow stuff, but
there's
also fast stuff. It's a mix. Usually records
are one or the other. But we just went for
it.
Hammer:
So. Should people download it.
NUFAN:
I'm all in favor of pirating everything. Our
label is getting better at that, offering
digital stuff.
You can now download our ringtones.
Hammer:
Is it hip to have your own ringtone on your
phone.
NUFAN:
No, it's not. I actually have 2 minutes from
Midnight by Iron Maiden on my phone.
Hammer:
The chicks will love that.
NUFAN:
Oh yeah.
