Devinn
Lane is a sultry, raven-haired, drop dead gorgeous
former
Penthouse Pet and Wicked Pictures girl. She
began her career as an exotic dancer
and moved up through the ranks to win a Best
Actress award, and multiple
other nominations, at the Adult Video News awards
the Oscars of Porn.
She has also shown her talents off screen as
a director, producer and
business owner.Devinn took a few minutes to
talk to BrokenDollz, during a recent
3-night stay as feature dancer
at Diamonds Mens Club in Cleveland.
She
told us about her voting habits, being a Wicked
Girl, and going on vacations
with porn stars.
Hammer:
You said youre not much of a Night Owl.
Devinn:
Not when Im at home. When Im at
home Im kinda just laid back, I suppose
like a regular person.
I tend to go to bed at like 10:30 or 11 oclock.
Hammer:
So early?
Devinn:
Yeah it is early, but my cat and my dog wake
me up at 6:30 every morning. My cat is like
a
rooster I swear to God, I caught her
doing it, she sits on my bedpost, right next
to the window
so she can see out the window, so she can watch
the sun rise. As soon as the sun peaks over
the
trees, she comes down and starts making bread
on my neck, and she wants her breakfast, so
I have
to get up, and Im like
. damnit
Hammer:
So cats and dogs huh? Youre an animal
person then, I take it?
Devinn:
I am.
Hammer:
Do you have a preference?
Devinn:
No, I dont.
Hammer:
If you were reincarnated would you rather come
back as a cat or a dog?
Devinn:
If I were reincarnated.. hmmmmmm.
Hammer:
If reincarnation is the way it works out. If
thats the right theory.
Devinn:
. Id rather come back as a cat
Hammer:
Thats what Id say. A lazy house
cat for a nice rich family. Sleep all day, get
some good food.
Devinn:
I just like the independence of a cat. Dogs
are extremely loyal, and I dont know
Hammer:
Yeah, I guess youd kinda rely on your
owner, if you were a pet dog.
Devinn:
Yeah, my dog is very, very loyal. You rely on
the owner, and my dog is very sensitive. She
gets sick when I leave sometimes.
Hammer:
How long have you had the dog?
Devinn:
About 6 months, she was a rescue.
Hammer:
How long have you had the cat?
Devinn:
Almost a year. I rescued her, but she was 8
weeks old.
Hammer:
You live in California, correct?
Devinn:
Ive lived in California most of my life.
Except for 4 years I lived in Tennessee.
Hammer:
You live out there now with the cat and dog,
and you have a child right?
Devinn:
Yeah, I have a daughter thats 17.
Hammer:
No husband now.
Devinn:
No. Ive been married before. Ive
been divorced for almost 6 years now. Im
in no hurry
to get remarried.
Hammer:
OK, California, you have Arnold Schwarzenegger
as governor. Did you vote for Arnie? Or
did you vote for Gary Coleman? Or your fellow
pornstar Mary Carey?
Devinn:
I didnt vote for governor.
Hammer:
Are you a bad American?
Devinn:
I voted for president. I do vote for president
and I vote on certain propositions and things.
I just felt we really didnt have a great
candidate to vote for for governor, so I didnt
vote.
Hammer:
So youre not happy with Arnie?
Devinn:
You know, he seems to be doing an OK job. But
the fact that we just had a really huge fire,
and he wouldnt release like 3,000 reserve
firefighters
was a pretty shitty move
on his part. We
needed those people, and we could have done
without all the smoke and ashes sitting in our
lungs and in our cars, and burning up people
homes.
Hammer:
Fires are a problem in California sometimes.
But, you said you grew up there, and Wicked
Pictures is there too right? You are a Wicked
Girl, what does that mean?
Devinn:
I been a contract girl for them for 5 years.
I primarily direct and produce for them, and
do
promotional work, for them now. Ive got
a couple new releases Lovers
Lane and Beautiful/Nasty 3
just came out. Beautiful/Nasty is
a series I produce myself. Since the beginning
of my adult career Ive
pretty muchworked for them. Ive done a
few movies for some other companies, but a big
chunk of my
work has
been with Wicked.
Hammer:
How did you get into the adult industry?
Devinn:
I actually was a house girl, at a strip club,
and somebody came in and said youd make
a great
Penthouse Pet. And I was like, Yeah right
buddy, whatever, Ive heard all the great
pick up lines
thats a really retarded one. Come one,
gimme a better one. But it turned out
he was for real, and he
gave me a bunch of references, and I was kinda
tired of dancing in clubs, it wasnt much
of a challenge,
so I thought
. You know what, Ill
go into this business and treat it like a business,
just like I did with
stripping, and see what I can do with it. And
Ive done quite a bit with it my
magazines to the
Howard Stern appearance, to the owner of Wicked
seeing me on that appearance and hiring me,
cause
he really liked how I handled myself in that
situation, and liked my look.
Hammer:
You said Howard Stern was nice? Did you go on
there just as a dancer?
Devinn:
I went on there as the current Penthouse Pet,
the cover and centerfold for November 1999.
And I went on again to for Playboy TV to do
some promotional work for 7 Lives Exposed
a series Devinn
hosted on Playboy. The first (appearance) I did
was the one that was one of the top 25 Stern
shows of all time. It was the infamous story
about me being the current Penthouse Pet, my
brother had
called in and he said My sister is the
current Penthouse Pet our dads a minister
and Im gay. And Howard
said, We gotta get them in here.So
my brother and I went I Stern together. I didnt
have anyone in the
business who got me in, my brother actually
got me in to Stern, and because of that I was
seen by people
in the industry and I got the Wicked job.
Hammer:
Hey, it works out sometimes.
Devinn:
Yeah, it worked out. And it was nice that I
did the footwork myself.
Hammer:
Then you started doing the movies. You did lesbian
movies at first right?
Devinn:
I was a girl/girl performer for
3 years before I moved over and did a boy/girl
film, for the past
2 years. Ive always been bisexual, its
justs, sex with a man was something that was
much more personal
for me, it wasnt really something I was
ready to put on film, cause I was aware that
once you put it on
film it lives forever. But, once I felt comfortable
with the male talent cause thats
essentially what I
was doing, I was sitting around shopping for
3 years; who are the assholes, who are people
with drug
problems, who are the people I wanna work with
or stay clear of so by the time I was
ready I had a
good idea of who I wanted to work with.
Hammer:
I saw that first boy/girl appearance,
what film was that?
Devinn:
Devinn Lane Show #5
Hammer:
That was a hot scene.
Devinn:
Thank you.
Hammer:
You directed that though and, like you said,
youre mostly directing and producing now,
is
that common for a lot of porn stars to go into
directing and producing? How did that end up
for you?
Devinn:
I would say aside from Jane Hamilton, that Im
probably one of the first female performers
to go in and start directing.
Hammer:
Yeah, the only other person who I found, that
I think does that, is Jill Kelly.
Devinn:
She has her production company, but Im
not sure if she directs them herself. Ive
been
directing and producing things for 4 years for
Wicked.
Hammer:
How did that come about? You just wanted more
power over your films?
Devinn:
When I signed up as a contract girl I told them
that that would be my natural transition.
That is where I wanted to go.
Hammer:
Did you have a background in film?
Devinn:
None, zero.
Hammer:
You never went to school for that stuff?
Devinn:
No, I never went to school for film or anything
like that. I learn quick. I sat and I watched
all
the
directors and producers that I worked for, and
shot movies of me, and I paid attention.
Hammer:
Was there someone who really helped you
out more than others? Like a mentor type?
Devinn:
No not really.
Hammer:
You just took a little from everybody?
Devinn:
I did. I think I took a little from everybody.
I think what I like to shoot is not what everybody
else likes to shoot, I like to shoot the reality
type stuff.
Hammer:
Is that the gonzo porn?
Devinn:
Its not necessarily gonzo
Like road trips kinda stuff. Like
I took a bunch of porn stars out
and we did a tour at a brothel in Nevada and
we used their fantasy rooms to shoot, and we
took quad
runners out in the sand dunes, and just shot
off fireworks, and it was just naked chicks
on sand and it
was really a lot of fun. We did it all in a
29 foot RV pulling quad runners.
Hammer:
Just shooting on digital cameras?
Devinn:
Yeah. Everything was really spontaneous.
Hammer:
And you help with the editing and things also.
Devinn:
Yeah I do. Everything was really, really spontaneous
at this shoot. Thats what made it a
lot of fun. Cause I took all of these people
completely out of their element, threw them
in an
entirely different environment and said OK,
lemme shake up the can and see what happens.
And
now Im gonna shoot it.
Hammer:
Do you edit those a lot? Or do you leave in
all those candid moments?
Devinn:
You do, you leave in a lot. You shoot more tape
on those type of things though, and the
editing process takes a little bit longer, cause
theres a lot to sift through. Its
just great fun. And I like
producing Beautiful/Nast cause its
all girl, and I used to be an all girl performer,
so I produce really
good all girl products.
Hammer:
Are you still under exclusive contract with
Wicked?
Devinn:
No. I work for them, and Im currently
working on other things for my own company.
Hammer:
Whats your company called?
Devinn:
Which one?
Hammer:
Dont throw questions at me Devinn, come
on
Devinn:
Lane Entertainment is my company and everything
falls under that like Club Fast Lane,
which is predominately the tours and stuff
Hammer:
So
you do some movies and you do
these porn star vacation trips to Jamaica
Devinn:
Yeah thats club Fast Lane. Basically I
bring porn stars down to exotic locations
like in March
were going to Jamaica for Hedonism 3
and I just invite fans, male and female, because
I bring male
and female porn stars, and people come down
and we just vacation and party, and we go on
private
excursions, just our group, and we do private
things
. So youre paying to have
more one-on-one kinda,
real contact with these people instead of waiting
in line for 3 hours at a convention. You spend
your money,
you go down for a whole week
. And the
last group I did was sold out.
Hammer:
How many people was that?
Devinn:
50 people.
Hammer:
How long have you been doing the trips, the
Fast Lane?
Devinn:
This one coming up will be my third. We do one
a year now. In 2006 it will be 2 a year and
in
2007 Ill start quarterly events, in different
locations.
Hammer:
People can find out about that on your Web site?
Devinn:
Yeah, Club Fast Lane.com Come live life
in the Fast Lane Its fun.
Hammer:
So, you do these trips, and you shoot in the
desert, and you told me before you have gone
to the Burning Man events are you into
these type of sub-culture entertainment things.
What else
do you do? Other than the adult industry?
Devinn:
I like rock climbing, I like backpacking and
camping, I like going to wine country, I like
really
good wine, I like road trips, I like motorcycles,
I like history, I like ATVs, jetskis and boating,
I like
traveling..
Hammer:
Where have you traveled to?
Devinn:
Ive been to Japan, Taipai, Australia,
China, numerous states, Mexico city, Baha, Trinidad,
Jamaica, Canada, France, I think thats
it.
Hammer:
Are these place youve visited for work,
or vacation?
Devinn:
Both.
Hammer:
Do you have a favorite place?
Devinn:
Jamaica
Hammer:
Do you have a craziest story?
Devinn: A crazy story?
Hammer:
Yeah, a porn story or a travel story.
Devinn:
Probably the strangest thing was traveling to
France during the Cannes Film festival, through
Wicked. They had taken a big semi with our pictures
on it and had gone all around the area for days
before we got there. And when we finally got
there and got out, we got a real feel of what
paparazzi really is. It was a little frightening.
People just started running out of nowhere and
grabbing
at you.
Hammer:
Have you ever had to deal with that before?
Devinn:
Not a that level, that was the most extreme,
but yeah, I get fans around. Like, I just did
an
interview on the radio station and there were
a couple guys waiting for me. Its just
something you
get used to.
Hammer:
What does it take to be successful in the adult
industry, to be a star?
Devinn:
Who knows, you got me. I cant say stay
away from drugs, cause some of the top porn
stars
have been drug addicts and written about it
and I dont know what it takes honestly.
I think it takes
a lot of endurance, a great deal of intelligence,
as far as marketing goes, marketing is the key
in this
business. The right marketing can take a nobody
girl, and you market her heavily, and make her
somebody.
Hammer:
Did you get a chance to check out www.brokendollz.com?
Devinn:
Yeah I did. I liked it. I like that its
not the stereotypical porn site, it was artistic
like you
had mentioned.
Hammer:
Do you look at sites like Broken Dollz a lot?
Devinn:
No I dont. I dont really surf the
net that much. I look at the Web for information,
things Im
looking for, but I dont surf anymore,
I had to give it up.
Hammer:
But you have your Web sites..
Devinn:
Yeah, but I had to cut back. I used to spend
hours and I wouldnt get anything else
done.
I was sort of an internet junkie. Lets
go back to being productive here.
Hammer:
So are you at a productive point in your life
now?
Devinn:
Im at a transitional point. So yeah, Im
productive.
Hammer:
You mean transitioning from contract girl to
your own thing?
Devinn:
Yeah. Im just putting everything in order
so that Im successful and not rushing
it. Not puttin
g all my time and money and energy into this,
Im just making a slow transition, thats
comfortable for me.
Hammer:
Well, Im sure youve made enough
money from the adult industry to fund your own
business,
but what else do you spend your money on?
Devinn:
Right now I buy nothing, cause I just bought
a house. Im putting my money in my home.
I gave up charging credit cards
Hammer:
Yeah, it doesnt work, I spent too much
money on strippers with credit cards.
Devinn:
I used to spend money on shoes, until I got
my dog, and she, for some reason
really like designer shoes.
Hammer:
Likes to eat them huh?
Devinn:
Likes to eat them. And the expensive ones too.
So, no more $500 shoes for me. So all my
money is going into my house and my business.
Hammer:
Alright. Well, people can find out info on you,
where?
Devinn:
Devinn
Lane.com or Club
Fast Lane.com you can email me devinn@devinnlane.com
I answer
my own email.
Hammer:
You dont have anybody working for you?
Devinn:
No, I will have people working for me next year.
But
with an internet-based business and
word-of-mouth business you dont need it.
It cuts cost. I know a lot of girls who have
tons of people
working for them and I dont need the entourage.
Hammer:
You could just list names on the Web site, and
nobody would know the difference.
Devinn:
Maybe, when people work for you, then they wanna
travel with you and you have this whole
entourage and its just not something I
need.
Hammer:
Entourage is a good TV show though.
Devinn:
It is a good show. What else do you watch, anything?
Devinn:
Ive watched Desperate Housewives
but its not something I could really get
into. I tend to
like documentary films, I love South Park. I
like the History channel, I like the Learning
Channel,
I like Animal Planet
Hammer:
Would you like to cross into those mediums?
Youre plan immediately is to grow your
business,
but if you could would you want to be in mainstream
movies, or a voice on South Park or
.
Devinn:
I have no aspiration whatsoever to have to appeal
to the mainstream world. I could make
so much money behind
..
Hammer:
Well yeah, I guess porns a big business.
Devinn:
Its a very big business. I like making
the money and meeting the fans, but I dont
feel the
need to be the next big thing. What kind of
mainstream contract can I get, or can I get
a spot on
this TV show. .. its not that important
to me. I dont do anything that doesnt
make me happy, Ive
always done my own thing.
Hammer:
What makes you happy right now?
Devinn:
My house, my ani mals, the excitement of the
transition, my 3 week vacation I just got off
of. I
have a lot of things to be happy and grateful
for. Abraham Lincoln, I think it was, says people
are as
happy as they make up their minds to be, and
I think thats what it is. I like living
a happy life, and
therefore I do.
